Latest Cell Phone Technology Markets You

Advertisers have always wanted to know what it is that motivates you to buy.  They also want to know what it is that you want, so that they can market it to you. In the past, marketers have had to create a campaign and then watch how well it does to determine if it was successful.  Modern technology has made it possible for them to guess much less, and know much more. Where are they getting this information?  That is right, from your very own smart phone. Cell phone companies are always looking for ways to increase their bottom line, and now, they are able to market all of your information from your phone to advertisers and other commercial interests.

Cell phone providers are able to track what you are doing through tabs that they keep on you called ‘cookies’. When you are online, your browser has the capacity to block this type of intrusion if you want, but cell phones do not. In addition to using the information that you upload and download through your phone, they also use the GPS locator feature.  This can help them pin point what market you are located in. After they package your information, they sell it to high-paying advertisers.  They call it ‘behavior ads’ and they state that they are much more effective then regular marketing techniques and are very lucrative.

It is possible to opt-out of these tracking programs, but it is very hard for the consumer to find out how to do it. Currently, there are not any laws that specifically forbid it, but everyone does have a right to their privacy, and for those who real value it, finding out how to opt out of them should be a high priority. Be cautious about what apps you install on your phone as well.  You may not know who else is getting all of your personal information.

A Drumroll for TomTom with HD Traffic

The ability to get to your destination on time and without getting lost continues to improve. TomTom is selling HD Traffic-enabled devices in North America. These devices look at real-time traffic data and compare this with the historical driving patterns of that area to give you the fastest route.

If you are a busy sales representative, it is important to see prospective clients on time. Being stuck in traffic does not pay the bills. HD Traffic looks at available data, which includes other anonymous TomTom users, and plots the best course to your destination.

If there is a slowdown ahead, HD Traffic will reevaluate your route and redirect you. It is like having your own personal watcher in the sky, telling you how to navigate your way to your destination.

People will love the ability to get home quickly when the city traffic is gridlocked because of a series of accidents or a storm that has affected one part of the city more than another. With HD Traffic, it might take a detour to get to your destination, but you should be able to avoid trouble spots.

The newest TomToms come with live weather reports so you can know approximately when that hurricane or expected tornado is going to touch down.  Weather changes over distances or even from one valley to another and TomTom can let you know what is there and how to avoid the problems that the weather is causing.

Fuel prices are now available. This is a popular feature for distance travelers who want to find the best prices but do not know the local area. You can also use Google local search to find restaurants, stores, hotels or other establishments to make your trip easier. TomTom with HD Traffic is doing its part to help you accomplish your goal: a quick and easy trip wherever you are headed.

Whether we are working or playing we demand the best tools to help us in all that we are doing. Enter Garmin with their Forerunner 305, a GPS in a watch. Imagine being able to run or walk anywhere. Head to the beach and start walking up the coast, admiring the waves as they wash ashore. Watch the gulls as they scavenge for food and the water as it washes through tide pools. You can do all this and still keep track of how far you have gone, your heart rate, and your current location. This is awesome.

A bicyclist can connect a Forerunner 305 to a bike adapter and then ride like the wind up and down mountain passes, absorbing the cool breezes of the clear mountain air. As you turn corners you can see wildlife as they skitter past. Hike into the backcountry knowing you are able to get yourself back out. The joys of modern technology allow us to safely play.

The Forerunner 305 also acts as a heart monitor. You can know when you are working within your zone and not stressing your heart. One difficult part of working out is changing from the coast to the mountains. Not only is the terrain different, but so is the air. Different levels of exercise are required to maintain the appropriate heart rate and having a heart monitor will keep you in the right zone no matter where you are working out.

You can also keep track of your progress from day to day and week to week. Know you are improving and use the free Garmin Training Center software to keep your records for you. Getting into shape is wonderful when you can safely monitor your progress and then conveniently see that progress charted out for you.

Get out; get moving and zone into good health and fun adventures.

The Suunto GPS Watch: Your Best Friend on a Run

GPS navigation solution running on a smartphon...

A lot of people hesitate to go running in an unfamiliar place. After all, you might have no Earthly clue how to get where you are going, or even how to get back to wherever you might be staying at. And in a lot of cases, you might not have a friend who will go running with you. Fortunately, there are some technological solutions to this problem, and one of them is this neat GPS watch from Suunto. Basically, it uses its GPS as a functional guide that allows you to track your course, your destination and your origination point. So if you want to find your way back home, you can do so without having to stop and ask for directions every few minutes.

Following the Sun is a great way to navigate. That is, unless you are in the mountains or forests, where you might walk or run for several miles between seeing the Sun poke out from between the tree tops. In situations like this, it can be extremely easy to get lost out in the middle of nowhere. And this is only more likely to happen if you have never been to this particular area in the past, and thus have little knowledge of the local landmarks you could use to navigate with. However, a GPS can help out a lot.

But with most GPS units, which are focused on being in a motor vehicle, you typically end up just having to follow one street or another. That isn’t an especially useful plan out in the wilderness. So the Suunto GPS watch is a pretty sweet little buddy on the trails. You can set the place you’re staying at as a point to return to, and even set destinations. While you’re still moving, you can even get an ETA of how long it will be (based on your actual movement speed) before you get to whre you’re going. That’s pretty handy.

It’s Time to Niche Down our Apps

We have reached an impasse, friends. Now that we have experienced what apps on our smart phones are capable of doing, we have plenty of work to do in order to keep them under control. No, this is not like the Terminator, where the machines are going to kill us if we don’t beat them, Rage Against the Machine Style. This is a matter more along the lines of the Trouble with Tribbles, where we have so many of a good thing that it becomes unmanageable in a hurry. With all of these apps essentially choking up the app stores, it can become something of a nuisance just trying to find what you are looking for. With so many different (in some cases only slightly different) applications and functions, sorting out the details could become a full time job.

But these are just apps, after all. Their intended purpose is to make our lives easier, isn’t it? If they only end up making life harder for the people who intend to use them, that is just crazy. All we really have to do is keep these apps in an organized set of locations, and they will be far easier to sort through, so picking up the ones you want will be just that much easier. After all, the person who wants a fancy GPS and trip planner probably wouldn’t be the same person who wants that app that is supposed to interpret what your dog is saying based on its bark.

Consider the possibilities of what could be, if we sincerely worked to niche down our app stores by category and by function. We could have the best apps from every category competing against each other, instead of against completely unrelated apps which have completely different uses about them. The current system does nothing but reward the owners of the stores, who get everybody to come to them. It’s about time we gave ourselves rewards.
