Besides, if screen size really mattered, nobody would watch things on their phones. We would all just carry around portable computers with full size screens to watch on.

In some cases, advanced access to a network that you may not even use (such as the 4G networks that some cities have in place, but many still don’t) can run you a nice fee every month. How often do you enjoy paying for something that you literally can not use? Smart phones might one day be a necessity. But for the time being, forget it.

One of the best things going for the smartphones of our world is that they have countless different apps available to them. You can find apps that can turn anyone into a music composer, that let you strum along to your favorite existing beats, or allow you to identify where other people with your same name are. You can also purchase a music phone that is designed just for these music apps, and plays your favorite tunes. If you can think of some bizarre function that you might want to make use of, you can undoubtedly find that some programmer is seeking to make their fortune by creating an app for it. There might even be an app for naming your children.

Consider what that might look like. All you do is answer a few questions, such as you and your fellow parent’s name, and a few of your preferences. It then spits out a few different names based on a massive database and your criteria.

The point is, there are so many apps out, maybe it’s time we did a little arranging among them. There are literally millions of apps, just waiting to be categorized, slotted into genres and uses, and even niched into entirely different places. Maybe it’s time for us to go beyond having mere app stores, and move on to having “music app” stores or “geography app” stores instead. That way, people who are looking for a specific function can avoid having to do quite as much grunt work to find what the are looking for.

After all, different people are out to find different things in their apps. While some people are all about the games, many other people are more into traveling functions, such as apps that allow them to find all of the rest stops on a given trip (which is extremely useful if you have small children, or really like to eat fiber). And some other people shirk all of the other functions, and prefer to focus exclusively on business apps. After all, if you’re going to spend money you might as well make money off of doing so.

This is why we need to build niche based websites for our app hoard. While there is nothing wrong with the creators of a smart phone making some profit off of (and having some veto power over) the apps that people want for their phones, we cannot allow any company to completely corner the market on something this important. Our apps can help us out tremendously, but only if we keep them in a place (or a group of places) where their various pros and cons can be easily weighed against one another. That would be both democracy and a good business practice.

But one problem occurs a lot of times when you work to identify where a stud is, especially in older homes where they used plaster instead of sheetrock (which is sometimes called drywall). Everybody knows that smart phone apps are all designed to fulfill some kind of a function. While some are dedicated to health, letting you record your blood pressure and other vital criteria, others are just for fun (like the tens of thousands of games there are out there). And still other apps allow you to do things in business, such as working with spreadsheets using a custom interface, or scheduling your personal business apart from meetings with your mistress and your card game nights (it’s okay fellas, we won’t tell anybody about it). But in all seriousness, how much will these apps really help your quality of life?

A lot of people get into the habit of buying things, under the mistaken belief that owning more “stuff” will somehow make their lives better than they are now. After enough time has passed, a lot of people finally break free of this silly assumption, which is thrust upon us by advertisers as soon as we’re old enough to breathe. But in some cases, people continue to feel that what they buy defines them. In cases such as that, it’s hard to imagine that smart phone apps are actually beneficial at all.

Honestly, that wasn’t even sarcasm. Microsoft really is being very smart in attempting to induce everyone to buy a new version of Works every couple of years. They did not get to be a dominant force in the software market simply through providing the best possible products- they got there by making a whole lot of sales of okay products. But in the process, they did leave the market wide open for a “dark horse” to come along and help people to use the same great types of files, and harness the same powerful (basic) functions, but without the hefty price tag.

This is where openoffice.org comes in. It allows you to create presentations like PowerPoint does, create spreadsheets the same way Excel does, and create high end text documents (as well as editing them) the same way that Word does.  So what you basically have in the OpenOffice XML is Works, minus all the “paying for stuff,” and the “massive end user license agreements” where you may or may not be signing over your immortal soul. All in all, OpenOffice gives you about 95-99% of the functionality of Works, but all for free. And it’s all legal!

If you have ever used an instant messaging program, you are no doubt well aware of all the problems that typically come up because of them. For most, there is a chat feature, which invites all of the spam bots, scammers and advertisers to clog up the chat rooms to the point where actual people looking to talk about whatever are in the tiny minority. But of course, there are also some other chat programs out there where this is simply not an issue. The most major of these programs is Skype, which is a lovely piece of free technology. Not only can you communicate through words with people around the world, you can also use your voice and even have voice chat sessions with it.

One of the great things about Skype is that, even though it has a paid element to it, it’s free for most people. If you want additional functions, that’s great. But unlike a lot of programs out there, you don’t have to spend so much as a penny to be able to chat with people on it. You may be based in the United States, and communicate with people who live on four different continents on the same day. Maybe the world has gotten to the point where most people don’t consider that to be any kind of an accomplishment, but it is really is pretty cool to have that sort of power. And it’s free, no less!

While the title of this article may be a bit histrionic (there might be one or two better methods of communicating out there), Skype definitely ranks among the best ways you can talk to people. There are no spam bots, no random IMs from virus carriers, and everybody on there is an actual person. You can even search for someone by name, and generally find them within a minute or two. If you have not downloaded Skype, you really need to.

For one thing, consoles have taken on a lot of PC characteristics. You can buy a keyboard for, and in many cases download user-created programs for some console systems that allow them to mimic many of the features that are PC mainstays. And in some cases, consoles now require hard drives, just as PCs do, because of the intense system requirements of some of today’s extreme games. If a game needs both a DVD player, a fast processor and a hard drive just to function, the gap between PC and console is narrower than at any point since consoles have existed.

Another way that consoles and PCs are converging with one another is in the realm of connectivity to the online world. Millions of people play online games every day through their consoles, even though the Net has only been accessible to such devices for a few years now. While you used to invite friends over to play a game, nowadays the trend leans far more towards sending them home that they can play at your side (or demolish you as only your best friends can). You can even download mods for console games.

For one thing, back in those days data storage space was at a premium. While today’s smart phones can store 30 gigabytes or more, during the era of PDAs the most high end desktop PCs didn’t have that much space to store data in. You would usually end dealing with only a few megabyes, which could easily be eaten up with only a few dates and a few dozen contacts. If you were serious about storing your most important info, you still had to write it down like they have for centuries. The technology which was available just was not up to the task people needed from it.

Another reason why PDAs failed as a genre is because they had too few functions. Sure, being able to store information in a small, conveniently accessed way was great. But what ultimately happened was that the PDA had no way to automatically update, and the user had no way to expand its functionality. So the relatively meager set of features you would get upon first opening up the device were what you would have throughout its period of serving you. And obviously, human beings hate technology that can’t grow.

A lot of people hesitate to go running in an unfamiliar place. After all, you might have no Earthly clue how to get where you are going, or even how to get back to wherever you might be staying at. And in a lot of cases, you might not have a friend who will go running with you. Fortunately, there are some technological solutions to this problem, and one of them is this neat GPS watch from Suunto. Basically, it uses its GPS as a functional guide that allows you to track your course, your destination and your origination point. So if you want to find your way back home, you can do so without having to stop and ask for directions every few minutes.

Following the Sun is a great way to navigate. That is, unless you are in the mountains or forests, where you might walk or run for several miles between seeing the Sun poke out from between the tree tops. In situations like this, it can be extremely easy to get lost out in the middle of nowhere. And this is only more likely to happen if you have never been to this particular area in the past, and thus have little knowledge of the local landmarks you could use to navigate with. However, a GPS can help out a lot.

But with most GPS units, which are focused on being in a motor vehicle, you typically end up just having to follow one street or another. That isn’t an especially useful plan out in the wilderness. So the Suunto GPS watch is a pretty sweet little buddy on the trails. You can set the place you’re staying at as a point to return to, and even set destinations. While you’re still moving, you can even get an ETA of how long it will be (based on your actual movement speed) before you get to whre you’re going. That’s pretty handy.

The Internet as we know it was founded by a group of people who all knew each other. They had absolutely implicit trust in one another- these were guys who married each other’s sisters. So if one of these buddy scientists wanted to access his friend’s computer, it made perfect sense to make it easy for him to do so. However, that was the 1970s, and a group of less than 1,000 people. Back in those days, there were no embarrassing YouTube videos or Facebook pics, and banking information was still stored almost universally on real, old fashioned paper.

While we can wax poetic about the glory days back before “technology ruined everything,” it isn’t technology’s fault. There is a shady element in the world- and that group of less than one percent of the population will happily ruin it for everybody else. So when you keep anything on your computer, you had better keep it under the virtual lock and key of a password-protected program. If it has any private information beyond your first name, lock it up tightly. And if you can, keep the password to that (hopefully a good one) off of your computer, too.

Imagine having the ability to send someone a message, and then meet them immediately. Only you work the third shift, and it’s 7 in the morning. As you and the person you’re meeting are getting off of work, most people are still getting ready for their jobs. The Sun is your Moon, and the stars are what guide your work most of the time. Before now, finding a date who wasn’t insane might have been nearly impossible. But with apps like this one, you can actually find more people than you may have imagined possible.

The best part is, it has an extremely great safety feature. Not only can you only find out the person’s name (and it’s only first names) if you message them (which reveals your name, too). You also can agree to meet anywhere, even if it’s a block or two away from where you both happen to be standing. There is no more of the difficult planning that usually comes into play with dates. And if the person really does turn out to be insane (in a bad way), you’re only spending a little time in public together.

But kinetic gaming is not just about having fun. True, that is most of what it’s about. After all, most people really aren’t that interested in playing “educational” or “fitness” games. There are an awful lot of those kinds of things sitting in pawn shops and decorating ebay auctions that will likely receive no bids. However, one of the advantages that you can have without having to think about with kinetic gaming is that you can actually become more fit through doing it on a regular basis. While one or two sessions might not have any particular impact, over time the results can be surprisingly good for you.

Consider what happens when you get a little out of breath. Your body produces growth hormone, which makes your muscles get stronger. Considering that your heart is also a muscle, this can actually be good for your general health and fitness. So go on and dance for a few hours. Work up a good, healthy sweat (which is even better if you aren’t alone). Not only will you be having a great time showing Mike Tyson who’s boss, or schooling Tiger Woods on the green. You will also be making yourself healthier.

We have reached an impasse, friends. Now that we have experienced what apps on our smart phones are capable of doing, we have plenty of work to do in order to keep them under control. No, this is not like the Terminator, where the machines are going to kill us if we don’t beat them, Rage Against the Machine Style. This is a matter more along the lines of the Trouble with Tribbles, where we have so many of a good thing that it becomes unmanageable in a hurry. With all of these apps essentially choking up the app stores, it can become something of a nuisance just trying to find what you are looking for. With so many different (in some cases only slightly different) applications and functions, sorting out the details could become a full time job.

But these are just apps, after all. Their intended purpose is to make our lives easier, isn’t it? If they only end up making life harder for the people who intend to use them, that is just crazy. All we really have to do is keep these apps in an organized set of locations, and they will be far easier to sort through, so picking up the ones you want will be just that much easier. After all, the person who wants a fancy GPS and trip planner probably wouldn’t be the same person who wants that app that is supposed to interpret what your dog is saying based on its bark.

Consider the possibilities of what could be, if we sincerely worked to niche down our app stores by category and by function. We could have the best apps from every category competing against each other, instead of against completely unrelated apps which have completely different uses about them. The current system does nothing but reward the owners of the stores, who get everybody to come to them. It’s about time we gave ourselves rewards.

Consider what cell phones really represent. They would seem to stand for a very high level of mobility in our society. But at what cost is this extreme mobility? A basic level of land line telephone service is most likely always going to be less expensive than a cell phone, simply by virtue of how simple it is to run a wire that transmits a signal back and forth. Compare that to a cell phone, which requires an extremely sophisticated network of different cell towers and stations, in order to run at all. Cell phones are a very complex, and thus delicate, technology to run.

But then again, being able to go pretty much anywhere and keep up your conversations (as well as using all of the other technological goodies that cell phones let you use) is awfully convenient. If you can find a land line telephone with a GPS unit built in, congratulations. Come to think of it, that sounds about as idiotic as the flash light that is powered by solar energy, and can thus only be used during the day, and only in the light. Although, it’d be nice to have that GPS if it got stolen.

The great thing about returning the gifts that you don’t want, other than the fact that you can get what you really do want, is that you don’t have to contend with anything more strenuous than the other 200 million people in your town who are doing the same thing. Everybody talks about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but they might as well make this into the holy trinity by introducing “Return Wednesday” or something like that. Seriously, everybody occasionally gets a gift that they don’t really want all that much.

The most important thing about returning electronics is, don’t open it if you can help it. In some cases, you can actually get cash back for returning something unopened. But once you break the seal on a piece of electronic equipment, only pawn shops and Gamestop will be inclined to take it, even if it’s in perfect condition and hasn’t ever been used at all. That is a very slippery slope, because anybody could claim that what they have has never been used- even if they got it for Christmas ten years ago, or something.

Some say that a body in motion tends to stay in motion. But what such nerdy types often fail to realize is that staying in motion is often not the end goal of being active. While Newtonian physics is a great springboard to science based on observations, it offers only a pale reference to real experience. A great alteration to that classic maxim might be to say that a body in motion tends to stay in shape. Isn’t that the real reason why most of us work out? While some people undoubtedly feel great about themselves after a hard workout, most of us would rather just stay (or become) strong and thin, and are willing to take some discomfort along the way.

This is where kinetic gaming becomes a pretty cool option, both for your lifestyle and for your body, because of how they make you work out without thinking about it as a big deal. See, what a lot of exercises in a gym environment try to do is a little on the unnatural side. Imagine you are going to do curls, for instance. In working just your biceps in isolation, you are training them to do something they really weren’t designed to do- to work independently of all of your other muscles. No other animal in the world does crazy things like that.

In that context, you move around as you naturally should, with every body part supporting every other part equally. When you move that way, you can strengthen yourself the way nature originally intended you to, as opposed to through the unnatural, strange process that our modern world tends to favor. Kinetic gaming lets your body both move and get stronger in the way that it should.

If you have ever been to a motivational event (hopefully without any method of buying the things that suddenly seem to be both incredibly and unbelievably good deals), you know that the energy the speaker exudes is contagious. And once your energy is stirred up, it also becomes contagious. But unlike the kinds of contagious things that make you take penicillin and get you stern looks from your doctor (Mardi Gras happens), this is a good kind of contagion that you can admit to anywhere. High energy makes people feel better, and it will help you to sell whatever ideas that have any reasonable basis to them.

With an iPod, you can listen to all sorts of different educational programming, from learning a foreign language to learning more effective negotiating strategies. You should never underestimate the power of listening to something useful while you wait for a meeting to start, while you drive from hither to yon, or even while you sit in your cubicle working on something.
