How Secure is Your Flash Drive?

One of the biggest problems with losing your USB flash drive is that almost all of them are open systems. Anyone who finds the drive can plug it into their computer and see everything that you have on your drive. United States courts have determined that if the drive is not encrypted or does not ask for a password, the the finder of the drive can look at the information. Ethically, beyond trying to figure out who the drive belongs to, one should not look too deeply into another person’s drive, but as we know, some people do behave unethically.

SanDisk has come out with SecureAccess software for both the SanDisk Cruzer Edge and the SanDisk Ultra USB. There are two key components of SecureAccess. The first is that the files on the drive will be secured in a 128-bit AES encrypted folder. This means that what you place in that folder will be virtually impossible to get into without the proper password authentication.

Remember that no encryption can promise 100% protection. I like the name that SanDisk calls this feature: vault. Just like a vault your data is safe. And just like a vault, it can be cracked, but usually only by very determined, practiced professionals with the right equipment.

Have you ever found someone’s drive, full of family pictures, and had no way to return it?  You feel bad for the person who lost it, but you can’t do much about it. The second feature of this USB drive software is that you can share portions of the drive without encryption. You can place a file at the front of the drive and call it something like “Found drive_ call me” or “Owner information” and then put your name and number in the small file.  Don’t be a loser–look at SanDisk’s SecureAccess protection on your USB drives.
