Amazon has announced that they are selling more electronic books for the popular Kindle than paperback books. In a brilliant move, Amazon released the Kindle app so it can be used on most of the smartphones as well as the iPad. This allows tens of millions of users access to the books that Amazon has placed into the Kindle electronic format. Amazon does not release actual numbers for sales of either the Kindle nor the number of books sold in either paperback or electronic formats, so there is no way of really knowing how many Kindle books were read on a smartphone, an iPad or a Kindle itself.

Amazon is fast approaching one million electronic books available for a reader to purchase, download and read. For the business user this is important as you can now get more and more books electronically and read them wherever and whenever you want. For the person on the go, a Kindle has an easy to read screen and is small and portable. The iPad can be used for other purposes so you do not have to carry two devices. The smartphone is smaller and even more easily portable, but not as easy to read.

Whichever method you use you can load up your electronic library and read as much as you want. Many public libraries now offer electronic books for checkout for a limited time. Long trips are easier with good books and voracious readers do not have to haul around a heavy stack of books. If you only have a few minutes to read while on a break or waiting for appointments, the electronic book is so easy to pull out and read on the spot.

Does Screen Size Really Matter?

Smart phones have a lot going for them. Aside from their ample drive space, their exceptionally quick processors, and their networks that open up the entire Internet no matter where you may happen to be, they also have really pretty screens. Long gone are the days when it was anything special to watch XviD movies with the XviD codec v1.2.2 or TV on a small screen, and have it look good. Nowadays, they all look good. In most cases, they even look terrific. But what about the size of a screen? Does it really make any sort of difference whether it is 3.5 inches, 4.5 inches, or some other figure in about that same size range? Truth be known, it matters a good deal less than it might seem at first.

For one thing, most comparisons of screen sizes ignore the fact that the smallest screens (which come in at around 2.5 inches) are still large enough to check out most of what you want to see. The largest screens (coming it at close to 5 inches) only offer you more room to show you what you want to see- in a lot of cases, the screen resolution is sufficiently worse that you will only end up seeing roughly the same amount of whatever it is. In the case of a movie, for instance, this can be frustrating. Would you really like to watch a grainy version of Avatar?

Some people say that size really does not matter. While that may not always be true (it sure matters in the weight room), screen size is really a matter of personal preference and resolution. The number of pixels they can jam into an inch of screen generally ends up being of far greater importance than the number of inches those pixels end up occupying. Besides, if screen size really mattered, nobody would watch things on their phones. We would all just carry around portable computers with full size screens to watch on.

Why do we Surrender to Autocracy?

The apps that exist on many websites which claim themselves to be app stores often seem like an “anything goes” hodgepodge of different permutations of a few similar functions. How many music programs are there which are barely distinct from one another? How many GPS programs are there, where all you have is the same code with a slight variation of the user interface? If all we are going to have is a bunch of extremely similar, almost cookie cutter apps, why should we have to go through the effort of sorting through them on an autocratic website owned by the maker of the smart phone these apps work on? That sounds an awful lot like a dictatorship, when you get right down to it.

After all, different people are out to find different things in their apps. While some people are all about the games, many other people are more into traveling functions, such as apps that allow them to find all of the rest stops on a given trip (which is extremely useful if you have small children, or really like to eat fiber). And some other people shirk all of the other functions, and prefer to focus exclusively on business apps. After all, if you’re going to spend money you might as well make money off of doing so.

This is why we need to build niche based websites for our app hoard. While there is nothing wrong with the creators of a smart phone making some profit off of (and having some veto power over) the apps that people want for their phones, we cannot allow any company to completely corner the market on something this important. Our apps can help us out tremendously, but only if we keep them in a place (or a group of places) where their various pros and cons can be easily weighed against one another. That would be both democracy and a good business practice.

Skype: the Best Communication Method Ever

If you have ever used an instant messaging program, you are no doubt well aware of all the problems that typically come up because of them. For most, there is a chat feature, which invites all of the spam bots, scammers and advertisers to clog up the chat rooms to the point where actual people looking to talk about whatever are in the tiny minority. But of course, there are also some other chat programs out there where this is simply not an issue. The most major of these programs is Skype, which is a lovely piece of free technology. Not only can you communicate through words with people around the world, you can also use your voice and even have voice chat sessions with it.

One of the great things about Skype is that, even though it has a paid element to it, it’s free for most people. If you want additional functions, that’s great. But unlike a lot of programs out there, you don’t have to spend so much as a penny to be able to chat with people on it. You may be based in the United States, and communicate with people who live on four different continents on the same day. Maybe the world has gotten to the point where most people don’t consider that to be any kind of an accomplishment, but it is really is pretty cool to have that sort of power. And it’s free, no less!

While the title of this article may be a bit histrionic (there might be one or two better methods of communicating out there), Skype definitely ranks among the best ways you can talk to people. There are no spam bots, no random IMs from virus carriers, and everybody on there is an actual person. You can even search for someone by name, and generally find them within a minute or two. If you have not downloaded Skype, you really need to.
